Circle of Friends (1994)

Set in 1957 Ireland, Pat O'Connor directed this story about three female friends who discover a wee bit more about life than they expected as they mature from school girls to university girls. Minnie Driver steals the show as Bennie, whose desire for Jack (Chris O'Donnell) faces many obstacles. O'Donnell, who, like most other "stars," is unforgettable in the "Batman" movies, has a good role in this film and fills it nicely. In fact, you'll probably be asking yourself, "Why the hell did he waste his time on 'Batman Forever?'" Other not-so-well-known actors (Geraldine O'Rawe and Alan Cumming) help give the supporting cast a solid foundation -- a true test of a quality film. The story itself is basic, but the relationships between the characters is what makes a film, anyway. And the relationships here are more than intriguing. You'll find yourself caring about what happens to just about every character in this film. Driver's performance in itself makes this film worthy of a rental.
