Das Boot (1981)
This West German film about a U-Boat crew and their travails is much more than a war story. Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, who also co-wrote the screenplay, "Das Boot" is a spectacular adventure film -- an underwater adventure as well as one inside the minds of the crew, and, in particular, the captain (Juergen Prochnow). Nominated for numerous Academy Awards (Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Sound), this film is a joy to watch. Though mesmerized by the many predicaments one would expect in such a film about a submarine crew, you'll also find yourself awed by the cinematography. Ironically, a U-boat "set" was recreated to make the film easier to shoot, but the U-boat replication was so lifelike the cinematographer (Jost Vacano) still had a hell of a time filming! You might find this in some video stores as "The Boat."
