Dead Man (1995)
Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, "Dead Man" is a quirky Western that follows the journey of a hard-luck-pen-pusher-turned-outlaw who happens to be named William Blake (Johnny Depp). And while the story centers around Blake's journey through the lawless Old West, the real charm of the film is Blake's relationship with his traveling companion, an Indian named Nobody (Gary Farmer). Jarmusch's writing is excellent, giving Nobody many unforgettable lines and creating numerous unforgettable characters -- including the crazed and paranoid mill owner (Robert Mitchum) who sends bounty hunters to find the outlaw Blake. Crispin Glover and Iggy Pop also make appearances, and Neil Young's stark music for this film perfectly matches its black-and-white landscape. "Dead Man," though slow-paced, is clever, riveting and memorable.
