Double Indemnity (1944)
Among one of the many gems directed by Billy Wilder, "Double Indemnity" is a classic murder/suspense film about an insurance salesman (Fred MacMurray) who plots with one of his clients (Barbara Stanwyck) to kill her husband so the two can collect the insurance money and live happily ever after. Except, as you can expect, a rather pesky investigator (Edward G. Robinson) can't stop bugging either of them about the circumstances of the husband's death. All three stars are magnificent in their roles, with Stanwyck getting an Oscar nomination. Wilder also got nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay, which he cowrote with Raymond Chandler. The dialogue is exactly what you would expect from a 1940s mystery (forget "The Shaggy D.A. -- you get to hear MacMurray say to Stanwyck, "Don't worry, baby,..." and other fun lines like that), and the relationship between MacMurray and Robinson is even better. This is a must-see for anyone interested in an all-around great suspense film. Georgie says, "See it tonight!"
