El Mariachi (1992)

This is a fabulous debut from the multi-talented Robert Rodriguez. Not only is the story interesting, but, from a technical standpoint, this is a great achievement on his $7,000 budget. Carlos Gallardo is el mariachi, who, upon wandering into a small, Mexican town, stumbles upon a guitar case much like his own that isn't exactly filled with his guitar, and many chases and gun fights ensue. This is a great low-budget action film and is much better than many of Hollywood's big-budget blunders. This is also a particularly well-edited film -- a clinic on good filmmaking with limited resources. I highly recommend this film, which was initially targeted for the Spanish video market. This is the prequel to Desperado (1995).
