Vita e bell, La/Life Is Beautiful (1997)

Roberto Benigni scored a couple of Oscars (including Best Actor) for this great WW II saga about a father who strives to protect his son from the Nazis. But unlike the other war films released at about the same time (Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line), the violence of the era is left more to the imagination, with Benigni's story focusing more on love and family. And while the subject matter is rather grim, this film at times is equally hilarious, with Benigni masterfully weaving humor into the most dire of situations. To describe them would give too much away, but do yourself a favor and go see this excellent film.
