Life of Brian (1979)
Hated by the Pope and others of strong and similar religious conviction, the "Life of Brian" is Monty Python's irreverent depiction of an ordinary man mistaken for a prophet during the time of Christ. Brian (Graham Chapman) wants no part of his destiny, but quickly finds that he is who people want him to be despite his insistence otherwise. This comedy actually caused quite an uproar after its release, but only because devout Christians who never saw the film thought it was a slam against Christianity, which it isn't. It's just about some guy named "Brian" who, quite literally, becomes a victim of society. The entire Python troop (John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Michael Palin and Terry Jones) is in top form here, and Idle's classic musical number ("Always Look on the Bright Side of Life") is unforgettable. Jones directed and co-wrote with the rest of the ensemble. Can't find "The Ten Commandments" at Blockbuster? Make "Life of Brian" your holiday selection!
