Love Serenade (1996)
Aussie Shirley Barrett wrote and directed this quirky comedy about a love-starved disc jockey (George Shevtsov) who, upon settling in a small Australian town, finds himself caught in a love triangle with two sisters (Miranda Otto and Rebecca Frith). For a story with scenes that pretty much depend on those three characters, it moves along at quite the entertaining pace -- all the way through the end. You won't be bored watching this one, and each scene will leave you anticipating the next. And given the low-budget aspect of this film, that's quite an achievement. Shevtsov is particularly convincing as the "studly" DJ who seduces the sisters with music from Motown and an honest charm wrought with indulgence. This gets a big "thumbs up," and I look forward to Barrett's next film!
