Manchurian Candidate, The (1962)

This film was so controversial for its time it was pulled from circulation after its initial release before being re-released in the mid-1980s. Laurence Harvey stars as Raymond Shaw, a decorated U.S. war hero who begins to exhibit peculiar behavior after returning to the states. Frank Sinatra plays Shaw's buddy, who strives in vein to help uncover the eerie mystery underlying his friend's behavior. And Angela Lansbury got nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of the excruciatingly manipulative Mrs. Shaw. "The Manchurian Candidate," directed by John Frankenheimer, has all the suspense of a classic Hitchcock thriller, but with a much darker twist as it explores the heart of man's evil nature.
