The Princess Bride (1987)

Rob Reiner has directed some truly memorable films ("This is Spinal Tap," "Stand By Me"), and "The Princess Bride" is another outstanding effort. Starring Cary Elwes and Robin Wright, the comedy/fairy tale is a true love story about their efforts to reunite after Westley (Elwes) is rumored kidnapped by the Dread Pirate Roberts. Not without its subplots, this memorable film also features Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya, a master swordsman seeking to avenge his father's death, and Chris Sarandon as Prince Humperdinck, whose pursuit of Buttercup (Wright) is deviously relentless. While the genre of the film might suggest otherwise, the main and supporting characters all are nicely developed, and the dialogue is equally strong, as well as very funny.
