River's Edge (1986)

This black comedy features a young Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, and Crispin Glover - three markedly different personalities caught up in a small-town teenage murder. Reeves and Glover are high school students struggling to deal with the murder of a female classmate who was killed by a male classmate. Reeves here is the sincere, thoughtful "Matt," while Glover is the ever-so-strange "Layne." Glover's role here is classic, and alone is worth the rental. Dennis Hopper plays the town's Vietnam vet, and you can probably guess what kind of character he is. "River's Edge" was directed by Tim Hunter and written by Neal Jimenez, who contributed to the "Outbreak" screenplay. Ione Skye plays "Clarissa," Reeves' love interest.
