The Run of the Country (1995)

This underrated Irish film stars the great Albert Finney and Matthew Keesler as a father-son tandem living in the countryside who struggle to define their relationship following the death of the wife/mother. Based on Shane Connaughton's novel, the film was directed by Peter Yates ("The Dresser," "Breaking Away") and is loaded with excellent acting, particularly -- but not exclusively -- by Finney. Vicky Smurfit stars as "Annagh," Keesler's love interest, who also puts forth a strong acting effort. And Anthony Brophy stars as "Prunty," a role much like the incorrigible friend who always used to get you into trouble. So, for great acting, a good story, and interesting characters, check out "The Run of the Country."
