The Apostle (1997)
Robert Duvall wrote, directed and starred in this slow-paced but wonderfully-acted film about a traveling preacher who, in an attempt to bury his criminal past, flees from his hometown and eventually establishes a church in a rural Louisiana town. Though surrounded by a good supporting cast -- including Billy Bob Thornton as "the troublemaker" -- this film is all Duvall, who plays the wonderfully animated Apostle, "E.F." Heck, I can't remember the last time I went to church, but after seeing this film I left the theater praisin' Jesus! Oh yeah! Lordy! Hold on! Here we go! Gracious! All mighty!
Okay.... go see it. And stay for the closing credits.
