Trust (1991)
Written and directed by Hal Hartley, "Trust" stars Martin Donovan II and Adrienne Shelly as two victims of Fate who, together, work through their troubles, guided by their desire to do the right thing. Both Hartley's dialogue and direction provide a solid foundation for this bittersweet comedy, and Donovan and Shelly are excellent in their roles; the bond that develops between them is never more evident than in the unforgettable closing scene. This film, in fact, has numerous memorable scenes, and Hartley's direction is so good you'll forget you're watching a film. The dialogue is not only well-written, but perfectly executed as well. Not only are Shelly and Donovan interesting to watch, but their characters are interesting as well, and the film's subplots will hold your interest, too. "Trust," by Hal Hartley. It's good.
