Valley Girl (1983)
One of the most inventive of all modern "Romeo and Juliet" scenarios, "Valley Girl" introduces Nicolas Cage as young punk Randy, who falls for a "like, fer sure" valley girl, Julie (Deborah Foreman). The screenplay by Wayne Crawford and Andrew Lane captures the essentials of "valley speak," a lost art, as well as those quintessential high school years -- the good and the bad. Both are terrific in their roles, but Cage easily steals the spotlight here. The supporting cast is equally entertaining, and the alternative music soundtrack features "I Melt With You," one of the best alternative love songs ever! "Valley Girl," directed by Martha Coolidge, is great fun and gets a big "thumbs up" on the Date Film scale!
