War of the Buttons (1994)
Generally I'm morally opposed to remakes, but this, a remake of the 1961 "La Guerre des boutons," is a wonderful film by first-time director John Roberts. Set in two villages in Ireland, "War of the Buttons" is the story of two "warring" child clans and the relationship between their leaders, Fergus (Gregg Fitzgerald) and Geronimo (John S. Coffey). The child acting in this film is excellent -- a tribute to the director-- and the story intriguing even if you wonder why the children are "warring" at all! Eveanna Ryan has a minor speaking role as Marie, but her character is far from insignificant. And Dervla Kirwan's succinct narration truly brings it all together. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and you will, too.
Addendum: Random people from around the globe regularly e-mail in search of more information about "War of the Buttons," which should indicate just how good this film is! Incidentally, if you're one of those random people, I don't know anything else about the production or how to contact the actors. Sorry!
